The story behind the pattern.

I love flowers and a new flower in my garden this year is the Zinnia flower! It took a while for the seeds i plant to grow. I was impatient so I started to crochet a flower while I waited for the real flowers to come. Now I have Zinnia flowers all year long! 🙂

Introduction

First you crochet a Zinnia flower (round 1-6). Next step is to make the flower into a square (round 7-10).
The stitches in the pictures are the stitches I crocheted (not what they count as).

Alternatives

The pattern below can be adjusted, depending on your own preferences. For example:

The initial ch on round 1 can be made with a magic ring.
You can start each round with a standing stitch wherever possible, instead of ch.
You can end each round with an invisible join wherever possible, instead of a sl st.
I prefer to weave in the ends after each round, for best result. You can choose to do that after finishing all rounds as well.

Zinnia flower (round 1-6)

Ch 4 (counts as ch 1, 1 dc), 11 dc in the first ch. Tighten the ring by pulling the short yarn thread.
Finish with 1 sl st in first dc. Cut the yarn. (Total 1 ch, 12 dc).

2 Change color. *1 sl st (counts as ch 1 in first repetition) in dc, 1 ch4pic (1 picot made with ch 4, 1 sl st in first ch)* 12 times. Finish with 1 sl st in the first sl st. Cut the yarn. (Total 12 sl st, 12 ch4pic)

3 Change color. Start the round in between any two dc on r.1, below ch4pic r.2, as shown in photo 5 below. *«1 lhdc (counts as ch 2 in first repetition) on the right side of the next/nearest ch4pic on r.2, 1 lhdc on the left side of the same ch4pic on r.2 (crochet around the picot so it sticks out between the two lhdc, as shown in photo 6 below)» between two dc r.1 below the ch4pic r.2.* 12 times. Finish with 1 sl st in first lhdc. Do not cut yarn. (Total 24 lhdc)

4 *«2 sc (ch 1, 1 sc in first repetition)» in each hdc* 24 times. Finish with 1 sl st in first sc. Do not cut yarn. (Total 48 sc)

5 *1 sl st, «1hdc, 1dc», «1dc, 1hdc» 1 sl st* 12 times. Finish with 1 sl st in first sl st. Cut the yarn.
The flower wants to fold itself, but that is going to be fixed next round. (Total 24 sl st, 24 hdc, 24 dc)

6 Start the round in first dc of any petal. *«2 sc (counts as ch 1, 1 sc in first repetition)» in first dc, «2 sc» in next dc, skip 1 hdc and 1 sl st, crochet 1 FPdc around 2 lhdc r.3 (between 2 pic, as shown in photo 15 below ), skip 1 sl st and 1 hdc* 12 times. Finish with 1 sl st in first sc. Cut the yarn. (Total 48 sc, 12 FPdc)

Attach all loose ends before you continue with round 7.

The square (round 7-9)

7 Change color. Turn the flower so the back is up. Start the round in the stitch that goes around 2 lhdc r.3.(made by FPdc r.6). *1 sc (counts as ch 1 in first repetition) in the stitch that goes around 2 lhdc r.3 (made by FPdc r.6), ch 5, skip 2 stitch that goes around 2 lhdc r.3 (made by FPdc r.6)* 4 times. Finish with 1 sl st in first sc. Do not cut yarn. (Total 20 ch, 4 sc)

8 Continue with the same color.The flower is still face down. 1 sl st to ch-5 sp, *«8 dc» (counts as ch 3, 7dc in first repetition) around ch-5 sp, ch 4* 4 times. Finish with 1 sl st in the first dc. Do not cut the yarn. (Total 1 sl st, 16 ch, 32 dc)

9 Continue with the same color. Turn the flower so the front is up. On this round we attach the flower petals to keep the flower from folding itself. Photo 24 shows the flower unattached. 1 sl st around ch-4 sp, (see photo 26) *«2 dc» (counts as ch 3, 1 dc in first repetition) around ch-4 sp, «1 dc BLO, ch 2, 1 dc BLO» in stitch r.5 on the back of the nearest/next petal and around ch-4 sp, «2 dc» around ch-4 sp (see photo 27 – 31), 1 dc, 1 dc BLO in stitch r.5 on the back of the next petal and in next dc (see photo 32), 4 dc, 1 dc BLO in stitch r.5 on the back of the next petal and in next dc, 1 dc* 4 times. Finish with 1 sl st in first dc. Do not cut yarn. (Total 8 ch, 56 dc)

10 Continue with the same color. 3 sc (counts as 1 ch, 2 sc) *«2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc» in ch-2 sp, 14 sc* 3 times «2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc» in ch-2 sp, 11 sc. Finish with 1 sl st in first sc. Cut the yarn and fasten the yarn threads. (Total 8 ch, 72 sc)
